You Know You're a Lifer When...
List member Dan Weckerly started a discussion based on the question You know you're an IAWL fan when....
Since we use the term Lifer to mean IAWL fan, I present the combined responses of list members entitled:
You Know You're a Lifer When....
when you introduce your neighbors to your kids: Tommy, Janey, Pete, and 'lil Zuzu.
when your pets are all named Tommy, Janey, Pete, and Zuzu...and Annie and Coco (for Coconuts)
when your best friends, also IAWL fans, welcomed you to your new house with gifts of bread, salt, and wine
when you've got multiple copies of the video, none colorized, of course!
even your family who never actually sits down to watch the classic knows it's beginning just by the first few notes of the opening music
when you stay up to 2:00 a.m. to see the movie on TV, even though you've got multiple copies (all B&W, of course) in the cabinet in the family room.
when your family won't watch with you anymore because you're blurting out lines left and right.
you refuse to make plans with friends during the holidays for fear that that will be the night they show IAWL even though you have several copies of your own.
when the mantlepiece no longer has room for those baby pictures and diplomas because your ceramic Bedford Falls is getting larger and larger.
when the spine on your Basinger book is broken.
when some of the little expressions in the movie---"hot dog!" "Hey, brainless!" "...silly, stupid..."--start creeping into your everyday conversation.
when you've reset your computer sounds with .wav files from the movie
when you don't even notice how annoying your desktop sounds are to the rest of world.
when you not only know all the words to "Buffalo Gals," but you also can sing the harmony so that it sounds "like an organ."
when your holiday celebrations aren't complete without mulled wine
when your Christmas tree is all IAWL ornaments or bells or angels
when you use Mary Bailey as a measure of what's the right thing to do
when you worry about the floor opening up ever time you cross a gym floor
when you think that Gone with the Wind is a big hit because it has stars from IAWL
when you watch "The Shop Around the Corner" and don't want Jimmy Stewart to get the girl because that would be cheating on Mary.
when you can't look at a newel post without smiling.
....or a hydrangea bush, either.
when you actually have to buy a house to make room for your growing IAWL collection
when your college buddies hit you because you say all of the lines in character
when family members gather around you to laugh at you when you say all of the lines in character
when your family won't let you play the IAWL Trivia Game because "you know too much."
when a listserve member has a question about a line in the film, and you don't have to look at the script to inform them
when you buy a DVD player for the sole purpose of having IAWL on DVD, even though you have multiple copies.
when you know the names of characters who were never named in the film
when you buy two of everything IAWL: one to use, and one to collect.
when the movie isn't enough for you and you have to buy the Nick at Night CD so you can listen to it in your car
if you get more upset when your wife knocked your IAWL poster off the wall in the middle of summer than when your ten-year-old son caught 30 acres of a wheat field on fire with fireworks
if you and your spouse use lines from IAWL as foreplay
when you try to explain to your 2 year old who Bert and Ernie really are!
when you become personally offended when someone says they haven't seen IAWL, or worse, say they prefer the colourized version!!! (What's up with that Mr. Turner??? Would you paint a toothy smile on the Mona Lisa!?)
when you consider naming your son George or James!
when hearing a bell ring when you are out somewhere and it brings tears to your eyes!!
when you've seen the movie hundreds of times and still, when you watch it, you hope Potter gets hit by a truck!!
when you run downstairs to your computer soon as your husband leaves for work to check you IAWL list messages!!!!
when friends and family come to your house just to watch YOU watch IAWL on TV.
when you give wine, salt and bread to every new neighbor.
when your email tag says something like "Everytime a bell rings, an angel gets his wings."
when you find references to IAWL that may not be really references..in the play SLY FOX there is a line about sending somebody out into Potter's Field...
when it now takes you twice as long to watch the film 'cause you're always hitting the "rewind" button on your VCR, thinking you've found a new "flub" from the film you weren't aware of.
when you notice you're now watching the film more by yourself 'cause nobody wants to watch it with you (... see previous statement)
when anytime you hear "Auld Lang Syne" ... anywhere ... you immediately think of the closing scene from IAWL.
when you tell non-IAWL'ers that you yearn for the old days when IAWL used to be on TV all the time, on all the channels, and all they do is give you a puzzled look and roll their eyes.
when even though you're a big NBA basketball fan, you were glad they had the lockout last year 'cause that meant that IAWL would be on NBC-TV three times instead of only once
when you know what IAWL means without asking
when you spend all this time on and e-mail list talking about it!
when you hear "Hark the Herald" you can't get through the part where Harry walks through the door and you can hear someone yell "Harry Bailey!!!!!!"
when you hear a line from the movie, and not only do you know the next three lines, you know exactly who was in the scene, where they were at, where they were standing, what they were wearing, and what they were doing.
if you rang a bell for Jimmy after you stopped crying when he died so he would not go another second without his wings.
