Data Modeling Workshop for Non-Modelers

Target Audience

Developers, Project Managers, Business people, Architects, IT Managers, etc. who are not going to be Data Modelers.

Description

An intensive, interactive workshop on data modeling essentials. This is not a lecture, but a hands-on experience that gives your team members insight into what your organization's data modelers do and why they are important to the organization.  This course is not intended for candidate data modelers, but for team members who are users and customers of a data architecture department.

This course was developed in response to questions posted on our communities about how to educate other IT professionals on the importance of better data models and good data modeling.   Attendees come away from the course with a better understanding of data architecture and data architects.  Project Managers comment that they better understand data modeling estimates, budget requests, and resource requests.  Developers comment that they understand why modeling is important to get 'right' the first time.  DBAs say that they better understand why model-driven development can save time and mimimize errors.  End users express their gratitude that models are more than just technical jargon.

If you are struggling with access to end users, meeting the demands of developers, or generally trying to produce better models via better model reviews, this course will help your team members appreciate your work and your processes.

Duration:  1.5 to 2 days

Objective:  To introduce data modeling concepts to your team members so that they will know:

  • why data models are used
  • how they are developed
  • what issues arise
  • why it takes more than a couple of days to complete a data model
  • why it takes more than a couple of classes and a book to data model at the professional level
  • why a single tool may not be able to meet all modeling needs
  • why a data model is more than just a diagram
  • the importance of business unit participation in the data modeling process
  • how other modeling techniques, such as process modelling and UML fit in with data modeling.

What you get

Training materials and a case study, customized to your modeling tool environment if you use tools from our partners.

Feedback from previous attendees

"Excellent for the overview. It now gives me an understanding that you just don’t think in the database about what information is valuable to the business and how the info relates. "

"I found this workshop very good. It gave me a better understanding of what kind of effort data modeling takes, and some of the issues Data Architects face. "

"[This course gave] me a better understanding from an Enterprise point of view, and also the importance of getting [Data Architects] involved early in projects. "

"It helps me to understand what the [Data Architects] require from me and the actual work that goes on behind the scenes. I have a better appreciation now and can provide better information if I require tables to be created or changed. "

"I could see where data modeling will be very beneficial when looking at XML DTDs/Schemas. Must understand the data and how it all relates to each other. "

"I think it was a good opportunity for non application types who sometimes wonder why things take so long to see what is involved in a good design."

Course Ad-ons

This course can also be combined with a 1-2 day pre-training risk and issues assessment to more closely focus the content to your specific needs.   We have also be very successful in facilitating post-course data modeling meetings and reviews with the newly trained staff and data modelers.
